Ithaca, NY – Woman Hospitalized Following Crash with Garbage Truck at Intersection

Ithaca, NY (January 31, 2019) – A serious accident that occurred between a car and a garbage truck on Thursday morning, January 31, prompted responses from police, firefighters and emergency medical crews, as well as a medical helicopter. The injurious collision happened shortly before 8:00 a.m. at the intersection of Hayts Road and Hopkins Road in Ithaca, according to authorities.

Multiple crews were called to the scene including the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department, Ithaca Fire Rescue, and Bangs Ambulance. Upon their arrival, responders found that a woman who had been driving an unidentified car crashed into the side of a garbage truck for reasons that have not been determined. The truck was reported to have been leaking diesel fuel and the woman was trapped inside the car.

The severely injured woman had to be extricated from the vehicle, at which point she was airlifted to Robert Packer Hospital to be treated. The roadway remained closed for at least two hours as crews cleaned up the debris and police began a preliminary investigation into the incident.
