Westbury, NY – Update: Seven Passengers Injured in Train Crash with Car that Killed Three
Westbury, NY (February 27, 2019) – New information concerning the two trains that crashed into a vehicle and killed here people on Tuesday night, February 26, has been released. According to authorities, the second train that struck the vehicle was derailed due to the impact of the accident and resulted in seven injured passengers.
Additionally, more information reported that a witness has now claimed to have seen the vehicle prior to the crash. The witness stated that the vehicle involved had fled the scene of a car accident just before crossing the tracks. The incident happened at around 7:20 p.m. at a railroad crossing located on School Street in the town of Westbury.
According to authorities, the first train that struck the car was traveling eastbound with about 800 passengers and spun the car onto the westbound tracks. A westbound train with about 200 passengers was approaching at the same time and ultimately sandwiched the vehicle which then caught fire. All three people who were inside the car were tragically killed at the scene.
The westbound train derailed after the crash and plowed into approximately 350 feet of concrete. Sven passengers were reported to have suffered various injuries, although their exact conditions have not been released. Police are actively investigating all the events that led to this accident.
