Mutagenesis is a GMO (Says European Court)

A decision from the European Court of Justice has decided that genetically distinct plants achieved through new plant breeding techniques like mutagensis qualify as genetically modified organisms. What is the idea behind Mutagenesis? The Court’s Decision The decision has implications for different strains and species of plants developed using the technique, which will now be governed in the European Union by the rules the international bloc has set out for genetically modified organisms, called the GMO Directive. According to the website Feed Navigator, high court’s opinion is somewhat unusual in that it runs contrary to the recommendation of the court’s Advocate General, who recommended that such organisms be exempted from the requirements of the directive. The case that prompted the decision emerged from France in 2016. Breeders were achieving new strains of plants with desirable qualities without introducing novel DNA into their genomes. Instead, they were playing with the DNA t...

PETA, Veggies Can Give You Ecoli, Too!

A new study found that plastic bins used in security check at airports carries more filthy germs than even the airport toilets. PETA – an animal rights organization – used the opportunity to place ads at the airport luggage bins saying ‘Meat kills, Go Vegan’ to strengthen their campaign against eating, wearing or abusing animals. They emphasized on the variety of pathogens that animal flesh carries like Ecoli , Salmonella that can cause food poisoning. But PETA – have you not noticed that veggies carry Ecoli, too? In fact, it’s been found that around 20%-30% of outbreaks linked to Ecoli are caused by contaminated vegetables. For anyone who has been following the romaine lettuce outbreak, it has become apparent that meat is not the only carrier of Ecoli. Veggies can carry deadly Ecoli bacteria too, and can infect humans. In fact, this year started out with an Ecoli outbreak that was linked to romaine lettuce. And yet another outbreak that caused 5 deaths was also linked to Ecoli f...

I Love Honey Day

As the holiday season gets in full swing and people are already patiently waiting for Santa to appear, there is a real buzz swirling around at the moment. It is hard to not be caught up as this is the season to be jolly. Thrown in this joy for good measure is national ‘I love honey day’ which is celebrated on the 18th December in the United States. There is no doubt that Americans love honey as we are the largest honey consumer in the world. However, we must give a shout out to Iceland who has a dedicated honey week! It appears that a land illuminated with incredible northern lights and glacier water is conducive to honey loving! In the U.S, we can try to compete with this natural beauty with our impressive national parks (go Yellowstone!) but we really excel in our honey production given that there are over 300 different types of honey produced. This article will seek to educate about the wonders of honey and get every reader inspired to drink, eat or harvest the best honey the wor...

2018 Food Recalls: Records We Didn’t Want to Break

The year 2018 has been a larger than usual year for recalled food products.  In fact, as of December, over 650 Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recalls have been reported. Let that number sink in for a moment. In less than 365 days there have been 650 food recalls. The FDA and USDA are regulatory agencies that, in part, monitor food products that pose a risk to health and safety.  These agencies have been busy throughout 2018 with the FDA handling 534 recalls and the USDA handling 122 recalls.  If you are curious what this looks like, it is over 125 million pounds of food.  And this is a low estimate, as over a third of the recalls did not include a weight therefore not counted in this 125 million. We hear about recalls all the time.  How significant can it be?  Let’s just say it is one for the record books.  It has surpassed the 2008 record making 2018 one of the largest recall years i...

Source in Romaine Lettuce E coli Outbreak FOUND!

CDC and FDA have identified a farm in Santa Barbara County of California that has the same strain of e coli in its reservoir as identified in the latest romaine lettuce e coli outbreak. But more is still to come. Traceback investigation is not yet over and agencies are still testing other possible sources of contamination. The outbreak has led to a total of 59 illnesses in 15 states. More illnesses can add in to this number. The Announcement FDA announced on Thursday that investigators found a positive test for e coli in an irrigation reservoir on a farm owned by Adam Bros. Farms . Since this finding, the company has also recalled other products grown at their site as an abundance of caution — as they were grown near the reservoir which tested positive for  ecoli. None of the recalled products tested positive for the bacteria. Recalled products include green leaf lettuce, red leaf lettuce, and cauliflower harvested from the farm during November 27, 2018 – November 30, 2018. I...

More Illnesses in JBS Ground Beef Outbreak

Eighty-seven more people from 16 states have been sickened by the ongoing Salmonella JBS ground beef outbreak linked to ground beef from JBS Tolleson, according to CDC. 39 of these illnesses are from California, which brings the case count from the state to 107 and the total case count to 333. More people fell sick possibly due to the fact that some of the products is still present in the consumer’s freezers. The beef processing facility, a division of JBS SA located in Tolleson, Arizona has issued two recalls before this one. One on October 4, 2018, when they recalled 6.5 million pounds of beef products including ground beef. The company later expanded the recall on December 4, 2018 to more than 12 million pounds of beef products packaged between July 26, 2018 to September 7, 2018. The products were shipped to retailers nationwide under many brand names. Check your freezer for recalled beef products. Look for the labeling with the establishment number “EST. 267”. It can be found i...

Feeling Lucky at the Group Pot Luck? Think Potluck Food Safety.

Summer’s heat often brings the threat of foodborne illness from outdoor gatherings such as barbecues and pool parties.  As temperatures begin to cool and the calendar flips to November, this time of year brings about the not-so-silent threat of pot luck dinners. Potluck food safety is a must this season. Thanksgiving and the holidays are a time for gatherings, sharing, and food.  Lots and lots of food.  Most families and even sometimes workplaces use the Thanksgiving holiday for pot luck gatherings.  I know everyone in my job looks forward to our “Diversity Thanksgiving Luncheon” where each person brings a food they really like to make or if possible, one that represents their cultural background.  This feast often involves anything from BBQ, noodle dishes, to things that I cannot even pronounce. Family gatherings are often quite similar.  One family cooks the turkey, everyone else brings side dishes and desserts.  This leaves the aunt that can’t coo...

Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Legionnaires Outbreak

A few gamblers at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort in North Carolina brought home dubious winnings this year. There have been three confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ disease in visitors to the casino from May through November 2018. It’s possible there are more which were not reported. Here’s the scoop on the Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Legionnaires outbreak. On November 21, the Jackson County Department of Public Health issued a notice about their investigation, reminding folk who visited the casino to contact their primary care doctor if they had a respiratory illness or pneumonia around 14 days from visiting. It can be difficult to pinpoint the start of an outbreak like Legionnaires’ Disease because the bacteria have a 14 day incubation period. The CDC and health departments around the country monitor reported cases and the travel itineraries of the patients so they can track down possible sources as soon as possible. In this instance, the cases were reported out of state and the CD...
