Batavia, NY – House Fire on Evans Street Leads to Death of Man and Dog
Batavia, NY (March 31, 2019) – Around 7 a.m. yesterday morning, police and firefighters responded to the scene of a house fire on Evans Street in Batavia. Various fire units responded to the scene. Firefighters arrived at the scene to find that heavy smoke was filling up inside and one person was reportedly trapped on the second floor of the home. The conditions were unstable but firefighters were unable to get inside where they continued their search and eventually located the victim on the second floor. They used a ground ladder to remove him. An ambulance took the victim to the hospital where he sadly succumbed to serious injuries. The victim has since been identified as John Sherman Sr. Many animals were able to get safely out of the fire but one dog perished as a result of the fire.
