Death by Candy?  Black Licorice Could Be Deadly

As if you needed a reason to avoid black licorice.  You know, that old-fashioned candy reminiscent of the bottom of your grandmother’s candy dish with 10 pieces stuck together in one hard glob of grossness that smells of old toothpaste and sad dreams.  Sorry.  Is that just me?  I didn’t think so. If you don’t like black licorice, you are not alone.  The Candy Store conducted a survey of 40,000 people to find out the most hated Halloween candies.  I actually expected it to be further on the more hated end of the list.  Ranked at 8, was licorice in a category of 11 of the most hated Halloween candies. Just for a bit of reference, the number one most hated candy was Circus Peanuts.  That confusing candy called a “peanut” but is actually a marshmallow that tastes like bananas in the shape of a peanut and somehow colored orange.  Yeah.  That one.  Circus Peanuts being number 1 makes sense. Others on the list less hated included: Good...

Going Clean? McDonalds New Menu

Ask anyone in my family or circle of friends about my disdain for fast food. Not that I don’t indulge in the occasional burger and fries while traveling or in a hurry; but, as a general rule I stay away from it. Be it the increased sodium, the fat content, or just the multitude of questions as to the origin of fast food meat, there are better, healthier options. Until now that is. McDonalds New Menu revolution. McDonalds is in the process of revitalizing the menu and is promoting an ingredient change to their signature burgers. Could it be that after all of the bad publicity, McDonald’s has finally listened to the consumer? Maybe … time will tell. McChanges “Change is never easy,” my grandmother always said. “But sometimes it’s needed.” Maybe Ronald McDonald listened. From the main news page at mcdonalds.com: “Since 2014, McDonalds USA has been on a food journey. We’ve been laser-focused on using our size and scale to implement meaningful changes across our entire menu, changes ...

JBS Salmonella Beef Outbreak – What is the Cause?

You probably already know that there’s a massive Salmonella beef outbreak and recall that’s being handled by both the FDA and the USDA.  The recall concerns 6.5 million pounds of beef distributed by Arizona company JBS Tolleson. The beef in question is being recalled because it’s suspected that it may be contaminated with salmonella bacteria. So far, the FDA and USDA are mum as to potential causes of the outbreak. The New Food Economy, however, has a theory about what happened: the salmonella originated from sick dairy cows. Dairy cows? You’d have good reason to be skeptical. In this instance, after all, the salmonella isn’t suspected of spreading through milk, or cheese, or any other dairy product; it’s from ground beef. Generally, dairy cows are raised for their milk, not for their meat. So how does the New Food Economy figure that they’re responsible for this outbreak? We’ll get to that question. First, it might be relevant to review some of the facts at hand. The specific t...

October 23rd of 2018 marked 120 different people sick across 22 different states, due to the same foodborne illness outbreak – the JBS Salmonella Newport Outbreak.  The outbreak strain of Salmonella Newport was reported as early in the year as August 5th and proceeded to stretch into the end of September, leaving thirty-three individuals hospitalized and over a hundred ill. While thankfully no deaths have been reported, JBS Tolleson, Inc., of Tolleson, Arizona, ended up recalling approximately 6.9 million pounds of their beef products on October 4th, 2018, in direct response to the outbreak. This type of food contamination and foodborne infection is precisely why the Lange Law Firm puts so much effort into food safety awareness and action! JBS Tolleson, Inc., beef products have been recalled by the millions, including their ground beef packages which are thought to have possibly been contaminated with Salmonella Newport. The beef products included in the recall were those...

Petting Zoo Ecoli Dangers: Not As Silent As We Once Thought

As a child going to a petting zoo was so much fun. We never really realized that there were serious dangers that could be associated with them. A fond childhood memory was going to a miniature horse farm that had shows where the horses dressed up and a part of this whole performance was that kids got selected from the audience for certain parts of the show. You could be really hands on with the animals in both the shows and at the small petting zoo afterwards. A total tourist trap in a small local town, but it was so much fun. There were literally gum ball machines filled with animal food and you could hand feed the farm animals and I recall them licking us and everything. We are talking about the early 1990’s, and I don’t ever recall sanitization being huge and this was prior to the time that everyone carried little bottles of hand sanitizer. Getting illnesses from petting zoos is more common than we were ever aware. The CDC reports that each year from 2010-2015 approximately 100 ou...
